Eine neue Veröffentlichung des Baltischen Orgel Centrums e.V. Stralsund
/ a new publication of Baltisches Orgel Centrum e.V. Stralsund:

Der Danziger Organist Daniel Magnus Gronau, Zeitgenosse Johann Sebastian Bachs, hinterließ die umfangreichste Sammlung von Orgel-Choralbearbeitungen aus dem 18. Jahrhundert.

The Danzig organist Daniel Magnus Gronau, contemporary of Johann Sebastian Bach, left the most extensive collection of organ chorales from the 18th Century. The 40 cycles of chorale variations, that had been found in 1909 in the archives of St. Johannis to Danzig, were considered lost since 1945, the music research assumend a loss of the source due to the events of World War II. In the fall of 2012, however, the two organists Martin Rost and Krzysztof Urbaniak made a sensational discovery: In the collections of the Newberry Library, Chicago (USA), they found a microfilm of this lost manuscript, created in 1981 and containing Gronau's opulent collection of chorale variations. In the present publication all the registration indications, that were written down by the composer to a total of 204 individual variations of 40 different chorale melodies, are published for the first time and completed with an article containing all available information about organs, Gronau had at his disposal during his time in Danzig. Through this publication the most complex collection of German organ registrations from the time of Johann Sebastian Bach is being made widely available for studies and further research.
